Riedel Grape Series Cabernet Glass (twin pack) (6404/0)

Grape Cabernet.gif
From its beginnings in northern Bohemia down to this day, for 11 generations and 250 years, Riedel Glass has stood for the high art of glassmaking. So much more than mere receptacles, Riedel decanters and glasses are imbued with the idiosyncrasies of the wine they are charged to accentuate, turning wine consumption into a graceful, prosaic experience.

The Riedel glass designs are based on the exceptional characteristics of each grape variety, which in turn determines the shape, size and rim diameter of the bowl.

The latest machine blown technology, in conjunction with the seamless pulled stem, offers a special design feature, which creates an indent on the bottom of the bowl, reflecting the light and adding another dimension to the lively color of wine.

Cabernet in a paragraph (or three): The result of a chance crossing between the Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties in the 17th Century, Cabernet Sauvignon has grown in popularity to the point that it was only recently surpassed by Merlot as the world’s most commonly grown red wine grape. This popularity has naturally lead to criticism, with some referring to it as a ‘coloniser’ – the name ‘Sauvignon’ itself, comes from the French word ‘sauvage’ or wild, and that parent varietal was a native found across many regions of France.

Resistant to rot and frost, Cabernet Sauvignon is renowned for also producing very large yields, but it is at this point that the flip side is revealed. Growers discovered in the 1970’s that these large yields, especially when from a particular virus resistant clone, produced herbaceous, green wines, that lacked the depth of flavour expected of the varietal. As a result growers have developed techniques such as ‘green harvesting’ whereby a percentage of the grapes are picked before maturity, inducing the vine to concentrate its vigour into the remaining fruit.

In Australia Cabernet Sauvignon is second only to Shiraz in red wine growing popularity. The area and even the soil in which the grape is grown have a distinct influence on the eventual character of the wine, with South Australia’s Coonawarra region even registering the name on the protected list, to stop wines that come from off the 15km x 2km strip of world-famous terra rossa, from claiming association. Anyone who’s tasted Parker Estate’s First Growth Cabernet Merlot will understand why.
