  Chalk Hill Luna Shiraz 2014

Considering the somewhat minimalist packaging this is a wine exploding with intense flavour and texture, like a storm in a tea cup so to speak. The purple colour is great in the glass and immediately appealing (especially on a cold winter night) and the aroma of lifted red berries (cherries, currants, and raspberries) with savoury spice notes makes an intoxicating first impression. This same fruit and spice burst onto the palate, there’s something reminiscent of a warm compote (I swear I can taste cinnamon, cloves and plums) that gives way to some pretty fine tannins that make for a nice lingering finish. This is a great pick for drinking now, but it will cellar well for maybe another 5 years or so.

ACCOLADES & AWARDS:

Gold, AWC International Wine Challenge- Vienna, 2014 (2013 vintage)
Gold, New Zealand international Wine Show, 2014 (2013 vintage)

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: 93 (2012 vintage)
Dense, deep purple-crimson; an extraordinary wine, with more blackberry fruit per dollar than any other shiraz I can recollect ever tasting; durif would be the only competitor. It is a velvety, luscious mouthful of fruit, dark chocolate and soft tannins, whatever oak used no longer visible - and not needed. Exceptional value.
