This Mystery Grenache is our premium producer's flagship grape, so buy confidently knowing that this is a critic favourite. Last vintage scored a massive 94 pts. from Halliday and this has already won a GOLD medal!
The fruit is the key starting block - sourced from 50 year old vines, located on sandy soils which give the wine a great depth of flavour and a supple yet grainy tannin structure. Warm to hot fermentation temperatures, combined with regular pump-overs and plunging ensured optimum extraction, while maintaining the delicate aromatics of the Grenache grape. Timely pressing, only using the best press fractions ensured good quality of flavour and the favourable drying, sandy tannin structure. The wine is bottled under screwcap to maintain freshness and ensure longevity. This wine is lively and intense, displaying aromatics of strawberry, rhubarb, cherries and hints of vanilla bean and dried herbs. The palate demonstrates all the characters expected from a medium bodied to full bodied Grenache: sandy, gritty tannin structure, lovely dryness on the finish coupled with balanced sweet strawberry compote fruit.
Past Accolades and Awards:
James Halliday: 95 Bright deep crimson; dark and exotic on the bouquet, with liqueur soaked plums, clove and sage; the palate is warm and inviting, direct and expansive, showing the true class of grenache in McLaren Vale; moreover, the quality of the vintage shines through. Top gold Melbourne Wine Show '11.
James Halliday: 94 Bright, clear red; while little more than light-bodied, and not entirely typical of McLaren Vale grenache, has precision and focus to its red berry/raspberry fruit, backed by fine-grained tannins.
