Softly perfumed floral notes head the background of complex red, blue and black fruits and a creamy blueberry muffin character persists throughout the spectrum. A plush length of intensity.
Most tannic of its Hickinbotham and Clarendon vineyard counterparts. Interestingly the spice of ginger and white pepper seen in the Clarendon is also apparent on the widely structured and tannic palate. Expressions of violet, dried basil and blueberries intertwine within the finely grained extract.
Low yielding, dry grown 88 y/o vines are hand picked thereby culturing whole berry, wild yeast fermentation. This increases the retention of the grape’s varietal essence and minimises bitter tannin extract. All pressings are returned to the barrel and bottled onsite without fining or filtration..
18 months, within a hierarchy of 1-5 year old tightly grained French Oak. Barrels are finally hand selected by winemaking team.
The 2006 vintage in Clarendon is best surmised as a Mediterranean finish to what was otherwise a typical Australian summer. The earlier onset of Autumnal coolness slowed ripening towards the end of the harvest season and enhanced colour development and enriched skin thickness ensued. The Blewitt Springs vineyard is dry grown in sandy, quartz pebble soils. Hand picking took place over several passes to ensure optimal ripeness of the fruit.
This wine forms part of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Premier Cru’ classification.
Fleshier and more structured that its predeceasing vineyards, a violet/lavender centre to raspberries, sarsparilla and creamy blueberry pie. Plush and opulent. Always smooth and creamy in its fruit expression the site really offers a unique balance of approachability and cellar-worthiness. The Blewitt Springs site has a brilliant aged profile that may be mistaken for aged grand-cru burgundy when tasted blind..
