Balgownie Estate Black Label Pinot Noir 2012

Balgownie Black Label Pinot Noir.gif

A classic Pinot aroma showcases an amalgam of ripe cherries, forest floor, earth and toasty oak. Lovely wild cherries and strawberries, combine with earthy flavours, to create an elegant complexity. The palate is velvety and rich, light to medium bodied, with delicate fine tannins to finish.

It's not just the Burgundians who have difficult vintage conditions. A 30 second hail storm in December 2011 reduced crop levels to 60% of average. Very mild and dry vintage conditions followed until just prior to harvest when untimely rains finally arrived. Careful hand picking was carried out to ensure only ripened fruit, in good condition, arrived at the winery.

In the winery the Pinot Noir was fermented in open vats, with hand plunging carried out, to gently extract the flavours and tannins. The wine was then pressed to French Barriques (20% new) and aged, on lees, for 8 months prior to a light filtration and bottling.
