LIke a very comfortable chair, you know what you expect and trust the delivery will be up to expectations on each occasion. Here the big sister - Cape Mentelle really coddles this sub brand to produce a consistently high rating, bigger style, comfortable and cosy wine for both the Shiraz and Sauv Blanc each and every time. I like the generosity of fruit here - with plush dark fruits and definitive tannins that continue to stimulate the mind and soul.
Marmaduke is a Shiraz sourced exclusively from Margaret River. The aim is to produce a fruit forward, soft and spicy red wine, which exhibits the regional expression of Margaret River and varietal intensity of Shiraz. Rich juicy berries with pepper and spice are the hallmark characteristics of this wine.
James Halliday: 91 (2012) Bright colour; a neatly presented portrait of southern Margaret River shiraz, with its cool grown red berry fruit flavours given well measured support from tannins and oak.
Peter Forrestal: Top 10 Best-Valued Red Wines in Money Magazine. (2012) One of Margaret River’s pioneers, now under the ownership of LVMH and with chief winemaker Rob Mann at the helm, is making some of the most exciting wines in its history. This is the entry level red, a generously flavoured regional shiraz with ripe fleshy texture.
Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: 90 (2012) Juicy mixed berry fruit, raspberry rope, pepper, lavender and aromatic dried herb stuff. Medium bodied, fleshy chalky tannin, bright fruit and a punchy finish of good length. For whatever reason, it has a sort of Spanish red wine character around it. Excellent. My kind of sub $20 red.
Ray Jordan: 90 (2012) Made as a current drinking wine. It’s all plump and fleshy plummy fruit with a little tickle of oak adding to the fine ripe tannins in support. Medium bodied with a slight savoury spicy edge to it. Well-crafted wine for this price. Great value.
Tyson Stelzer: 94 (2011) Rob Mann quietly mentioned to me recently that he reckons 2011 to represent the finest reds he's made in Margaret River yet. A monumental statement, considering the mesospheric standards he has set in 2008, 2009 and 2010. We'll have to wait until next year for the full answer, but if Marmaduke is any indication, there are great things in store. The intricate craftsmanship on display in this wine is virtually unheard of at this price. At a cool 13.5%, it's refreshingly medium-bodied, charged with energetic, impressively poised acidity and a textural undercurrent of finely ground, gravelly tannins. An enticing violet perfume wafts over restrained black cherry, plum skin and pepper notes.
James Halliday: 94 (2011) Great reds are in store from Margaret River's magnificent '11 season, and Marmaduke is one of the first indications. Intricate craftsmanship rarely witnessed at this price sets an enticing violet perfume over restrained black cherry, plum skin and pepper notes. At a cool 13.5%, it's refreshingly medium-bodied, charged with energetic acidity and finely ground, gravelly tannins.
