Dark berries and roasted coffee dominates the bouquet. The palate has rich cherry flavours with hints of vanillin oak and earthy spice providing balance and complexity.
The deep, brooding red colour coats the glass and the long, elegant “legs” hint at a wine that is rich and full bodied. The bouquet reflects the rich tapestry of the region with ripe dark fruits, spices, olives and smokehouse meats. The heady aroma is evocative and intoxicating while the palate bursts opens with blackberries, smoky oak, white pepper and anise. The flavours continue to grow as the wine warms on your tongue with hints of licorice, eucalypt and mocha. The earthy, gamey characters follow onto the long, dry finish with gripping tannins giving a lasting sense of enjoyment.
The Chris Hill Reserve wines are a collection of limited release, personal favourites that express an extra dimension of character and flavour. This wine is from a premium vineyard in the Willunga sub region and has had 24 months barrel maturation in 3 year old American oak. The result is a complex, savoury delight which will continue to develop for up to a decade.
Staff Tasting: Another excellent release from Chris Hill; well deserved of the Reserve label he has been affixing to wines of this calibre in recent years. A heady nose of rhubarb, tomato, blackcurrant, raspberry, spice and all things nice. The palate arrives initially with a fruit mince pie, plummy front, before settling into flavours in the blackberry, vanilla and rhubarb spectrum, and winding up with judicious tannin and length. Even finer with a little time in the decanter. Quality. Tasters: MM, LC, BK.
