2013 was a strong vintage for the region, despite lower than average rainfall. Mild summer temperatures allowed for a gradual ripening period, with harvest taking place in February / March. Embodying the South Australian style of full bodied, punchy shiraz, this is a fantastic match for chargrilled lamb or beef.
Deep and dark in colour, intense blackberry flavours hit the palate, interwoven with hints of spice, star anise and black pepper. The Heartland motto of being able to 'taste it from where you are' certainly rings true. Tannins are supple and provide a good backbone to this wine. A great drop for everyday enjoyment now through 2020.
James Halliday - 91 Points (2013): "Not a hair out of place. Hearty blackberry and tar flavours come laced with chocolate and peppercorn. Attacks with flavour from the start and doesn't let go. Value."
Winemaking: The fruit was de-stemmed, crushed, then pumped over twice a day for nine days to enhance colour and flavour. Fermentation with our Rhône isolate yeast was at 18°-24°C. Extended maceration resulted in savoury, supple tannins and an approachable palate. The wine matured for 14 months in oak prior to bottling.
2013 is a gentle year that has yielded wines of great potential. The growing period presented a minor frost event in September and a cool early flowering period. Overall yields were 5% down on the already reduced 2012 vintage. A dry lead up to harvest led to a frantic run between early February and late March, getting all the fruit in at the right time.
