  Katnook Estate Shiraz 2010

The Shiraz coming out of Coonawarra continues to amaze us that it does not have a better reputation because this release from Katnook had us in a frenzy. It’s got some real power as well as cool climate elegance and that’s what won us over, as you will discover. Aged for 15 months in American oak leaving a subtle imprint as well as raspberry and mulberry fruit, mint, pepper and spice. Layered with intense fruit before flavours of chocolate, vanilla and spice round out the palate ending with fine-grained tannins. It could only possibly go with a leg of lamb rubbed with rosemary, salt, mint and garlic.

Whilst Coonawarra is lesser known for Shiraz than Cabernet Sauvignon, the region produces outstanding examples of the variety. Katnook Estate Shiraz captures the elegance and underlying power of classic cool climate Shiraz. The wine usually matures in oak maturation for around 15 months in American oak barriques, 35% of which are new. Cellaring potential is 8 to 12 years. Ideal food matches are game, red meat dishes and hard cheeses.

Accolades and Awards:

Silver Medal: International Wine Challenge
"Long, restrained and elegant. A classic example of Coonawarra Shiraz, with alluring blackberry supported by violet and minty notes. Smoky, smooth tannins and incredible length. Very classy."

James Halliday: 94
Deep, bright crimson; restrained and savoury aromas of black fruits, sage and spicy mocha oak; the palate is medium-to full-bodied, with tightly packed tannins and fresh black fruits, offset by a lingering mocha and floral violet note to conclude.

Rob Geddes MW:
Considerable oak contributes pencil and caramel aromas welded to the ripe berry fruit. Very soft hallmark tannins allow for a smooth entry. A soft middle palate and some saliva inducing tannin and acid finishes with black fruit soft. If you like smooth and complex this is for you.
