Trophy for the Best Shiraz between $25 and $50. 2010 McLaren Vale Wineshow.
"92 POINTS. Black fruit, vanilla, wood, ironstone and malty/nutty flavours. It’s large in scale with good round ripe tannins and plenty of savoury pleasures to go along with the dark fruit and bitter chocolate. There’s some warmth and it’s perhaps a little ‘blunt’, but all up an authentic and rewarding McLaren Vale Shiraz." - Gary Walsh.
Colour: Deep ink/purple.
Nose: Initially the nose is dominated by bright rich black mulberries, Satsuma plum and dark chocolate. A swirl of the glass also reveals some cinnamon, white pepper and a trace of mint.
Palate: The weight and power from the rich primary fruit has been carefully balanced with subtle use of large format American and Eastern European oak 1/3 new, the rest second use and third use. While very approachable at present, the wine is structured such that it will stand the test of time and careful cellaring will reward those with due patience.
Vintage 2008 was very kind to Kay Brothers Amery red wines. All fruit was picked before the “Heatwave”. As a consequence the wines are generous in flavour, blessed with juicy ripe tannins and a sublime natural acidity.
The Hillside vineyard was initially planted in 1892 and in 1992 a systematic replanting of the eastern hillside commenced using cuttings taken from the 100 year old Block 6 Shiraz vines. This is the 12th release of our Hillside Shiraz with the grapes harvested during March 2008 and processed traditionally with open fermentation and basket pressing. Vintage 2008 was very kind to Kay Brothers Amery red wines. All fruit was picked before the “heatwave”. As a consequence the wines are generous in flavour, blessed with juicy ripe tannins and a sublime natural acidity.
