Its increasingly clear to me we are spoiled for choice with huge leaps in quality fruit and winemaking skills punching well above their pay grades to deliver knock out wines at extraordinary prices. This ripper from Pyrenees region in Victoria is elegantly crafted by Dominic and provides succulent deep Black cherry hue and pepper, spicy plum and mixed berries aromas lead to a full rich palate. Sweet blueberries, mulberries and plum flavours are underscored by subtle anise and nutmeg integrating with the savoury oak and supple tannins. The obvious fruit flavours are harnessed by the elegant structure making for a refined and aromatic Shiraz, with delightful drive and long lingering powdery tannins that deliver a seamless, smooth finish.

Pyrenees fruit from selected blocks is carefully blended with parcels from our Estate vineyard. Fermented on skins in small open fermenters and stainless steel tanks for 8 to 10 days using a variety of yeasts including Rhone 2323, AWRI 350 and VQ15 to maximise fruit vibrancy, confectionery spice notes and complexity. Regular pump-overs and hand plunging assist in the gentle extraction of fruit flavours, colour and delicate fruit tannins. MLF was encouraged on skins and completed in tank prior to ageing in a selection of oak barrels.

James Halliday 5 Star Rated Vineyard

2012 Vintage: 90 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
"This is a seriously good wine at its price. The colour is bright, and the flavours provide a juicy, lingering finish to the array of red and black cherry flavours; the tannins are fine, the oak barely perceptible. Drink whenever the mood takes you."

The estate is located just outside the town of Avoca. This historic quaint town was a pioneer in the Gold Rush era shaping early Victoria in the 1850s and confirming its importance as an idyllic location for mining and agriculture.

It was a passion for the Barry family to break from the busy-ness of the big smoke and after considerable research, the property off Moates Lane was purchased and the first vines were planted (Trebbiano, Shiraz and Semillion) in 1970.

Over the next 25 years the vineyard delved deep into the commercial world of Victorian wine. Initially seeking co-operation from neighbouring vineyards such as Chateau Remy (now Blue Pyrenees) and Seppelts, Mount Avoca has grown to over 60 acres of diverse varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Franc all producing award winning wines
