JUST IN: GOLD medal winner at the Sydney International Wine Competition! What a wine for this price , simply a stunner! I shared a bottle of this at Yum Cha and Seafood chilli fest yesterday and have decided this is an amazing wine that will continue to develop - what a wine. 5 STARS and a BIG YES!
Named after the founder of Schild estate, this award winning shiraz is a real Barossa gem and a bargain at this price. I could name you 150 wines at double this price that just don't give you anywhere near the rich, layered , opulent stylish wine like this one. It's a dark rich purply black in the glass, with bold blackcurrant aromas immediately apparent. There are also creamy vanilla intermingled with chocolate and mocha notes all together they spell trouble for your pouring hand as it trembles to add just a dash more.
The palate is nicely balanced, full bodied to start with and has an inner core of dark fruit. Big , balanced licks of Oak with a hefty 24 months maturation is well integrated, with tannins providing good structure. The finish is perfumed with an earthy, acidic edge. Ready to drink now through 2024.

GOLD - Sydney International Wine Show 2016. Judges Comments:
Sue Bastian It was inky purple in colour. It had intense red and dark berries and jam. Mainly fruit on the nose with hints of chocolate. An attractive fruity palate with sweet berries and soft tannin. Very sort of uncomplicated. Sort of shortish length and the sweet fruits matched the meat and the carrot but it’s more of a commercial style.
Cameron Douglas A ripe bouquet but also a lifted and distracting volatile acidity note. It’s a little bit jammy with mild pepper characteristics. Dry to very dry. Medium plus alcohol with some grippy tannins and medium plus acid. Overall the wine is good despite my comments. Maybe it’s a bit young. With food overall good. The wine seems to be quite a good food wine although a tad sweet and jammy on the finish.
Mark Robertson The aroma on this is obviously jammy in the red fruit spectrum. It’s simple with one dimensional aromatics and the palate has better balance with tannin and acid. It’s richer in length and just a little simple but still well done. With food that juby maceration character comes through. The wine is simple and honest.
Andrea Pritzker An inky ruby hue with lifted boysenberry and mulberry aromas that lead into a fresh juicy palate with lovely concentration and ripe tannins. Looks more simple with the food but still delivers great freshness.
Andreas Larsson Showing sweet aromas. Jammed berries with wood and mild spices. It has a really soft sweet palate with moderate length. It turns out a bit sweet together with food as well.
Stuart Halliday A rich and ripe dark berry fruit nose. Black fruit and a touch of cedary oak. A sweet fruit driven palate.
2012 was a one of those wonderful year’s where mother nature provides the kind of climatic conditions that sees both winemakers and vignerons get excited.
We saw sufficient, but not excessive rainfall which fell at the right times. There was also a lack of excessive heat. These combined ensuring that the ripening cycle was slow and deliberate resulting in great fruit depth, structure and balance to many of the wines produced from this year.

94 Points - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: "From a vineyard above Lyndoch; open-fermented , matured for 24 months in new and used French, American and Hungarian oak. It has a complex array of blackberry, blueberry, plum and mocha flavours; earthy acidity provides freshness and lift on the finish."
91 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front: "Fruit-dense, inky, sweet style of Barossa shiraz. Liberal wash of minty, creamy oak confirms the picture. Satiny-smooth plum, raisin and liquorice flavours. Hits with bold flavour right from the word go, and doesn’t let up. Simple but effective."
