Old Vine Reserve Shiraz is one of Australia's finest examples of cool climate Shiraz. With its deep purple/red colour, spicy/berry fruit nose, an intense palate of pepper/spice characters, hints of cassis and soft vanillin oak, this wine is the flagship of the range. Seville Estate Old Vine Reserve Shiraz, while very approachable in its youth, is made with longevity in mind, and should reach its potential with 10 years cellaring.
Situated on a ridge of red volcanic soil overlooking the upper Yarra Valley – hidden from the well-trodden tracks of the mainstream, the soils at Seville Estate are extremely fertile red to grey volcanic, over a clay base.
The vines are substantially dry grown, as irrigation is only used when the vines are under extreme stress.
"Deeper colour than the varietal; while medium-bodied, has considerable depth to the complex flavours of black cherry, blackberry, spice, licorice and pepper supported by lingering tannins. Rating 94" - James Halliday.
"Good intensity matched to shots of five-spice and pepper. Has a kirsch-like character to the fruit flavour, and a meatiness to its more savoury aspects. It has good ripeness and power, though it remains ‘cool climate’ in its styling from go to whoa. Twiggy characters too. Very good wine. 92+ Points" - Campbell Mattinson.
