  Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz 2010

Woodcutters Shiraz 2005.jpg
Dense, rich and opulent, this wine combines great fruit purity with texture, complexity and finesse. It is elegant, structured and powerful and is a fantastic introduction to the Torbreck range. Whilst offering immense pleasure in its youth the 2010 Woodcutter’s Shiraz will no doubt develop into an impressive wine with a few years in the cellar.

Like all wines in the Torbreck stable, the fruit is sourced from hand harvested and hand tended plots throughout the Northwestern Barossa Valley. It is fermented in our cement, wooden and stainless steel vats for 6-7 days and then basket pressed to well seasoned hogsheads and French oak foudres for 12 months. It is bottled without the use of either fining or filtration.

"It’s the nearest thing to a ‘barrel sample’ red wine you could ever hope to encounter from a bottle. It’s enormously fresh and raw. It’s dense, smooth, black and flavoursome too, with slinky blueberry/blackberry and very little of the ‘burnt sugar’ flavour that can characterise Torbreck reds. This wine feels polished. Pure. Hearty. And delicious. 90 Points." - Campbell Mattinson.

Staff Tasting: Torbreck’s Woodcutters Shiraz has been an open favourite amongst everyone at WBW for years. The 2008 was one of the first added to the BYO kit bag during restaurant outings. The 2009, on the other hand, was less popular. It seemed the enigmatic David Powell had taken the wine in a different direction, forgoing the berry, plum and mocha flavours we’d come to expect and moved towards something more savoury, subtle and, quite frankly, less tasty. Having said all that, James Halliday rated it as the best Woodcutters Shiraz ever (93 points). So go figure.

2010 marks a return to the explosiveness of 2008. Black cherries, peppery fruits, mocha and raspberry nose; the aromas climb out of the glass like dry ice. The palate, even at this early stage of its release, is beautifully balanced. Those giant overripe plums are back, fighting it out with rich cherries and, for me, the sign that it’s a true Torbreck Barossa Shiraz, the blatant suggestion of Ribena. But, perhaps in a nod to the 2009, there is enough leathery spice and woody pepper to ensure this is not just a fruit bomb that will die off in a couple of years, or leave your mouth feeling tart. One for the kit bag once again, regardless of what Halliday thinks. Tasters: BK, MM, CN, MK, LC, GC.
