This classification displays a greater level of richness and complexity, produced through the blending of selected parcels of wine, often matured in various sizes of oak cask to impart the distinctive dry ‘rancio’ characters produced from maturation in seasoned wood. The Tokays of Rutherglen bear a mark of authenticity – an oval logotype with a stylised “R” – which is only applied to the wines drawn from the great vineyards of the region. The “Tokay of Rutherglen” trademark assures the highest quality of wine exclusively sourced from the Rutherglen Wine Region.
Campbell’s ‘house style’ is typically complex and elegant, capturing a rich purity of fruit flavours.
COLOUR: Deep golden.
BOUQUET: Rich aromas of cold tealeaf, toffee, honey and citrus.
PALATE: Intense and mouthfilling. Malt and toffee combine with rancio characters providing a wine of power and complexity with a luscious yet clean finish.
CELLARING AND SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Blended for optimum flavour and balance prior to bottling, this wine will not improve with further cellaring and should ideally be enjoyed soon after opening. Perfect with fresh fruit, sticky date pudding or freshly brewed coffee and fine chocolates.
THE GRAPES: Rutherglen tokay (muscadelle) grown at Campbells, Rutherglen.
WINEMAKING: The tokay grapes are left late in the season to achieve optimum ripeness, ensuring maximum fruit flavour and a high degree of natural sweetness. Only selected parcels of premium fruit are used to produce wines for this solera. The wine that provides the basis of this blend dates back to the 1950’s. Only small amounts are withdrawn from this solera ensuring the highest quality and consistency of style.
*In 2007, under the terms of the Australia-European Community Agreement on Trade in Wine, Australia agreed to cease using certain European names, including Tokay. Topaque was settled on as the industry synonym, a name derived from Topaz, a unique gem considered to have similar precious attributes as this well loved wine.
James Halliday Review: Medium brown; has clear-cut varietal character on both the bouquet and palate, with tea leaf, toffee and cake flavours; a delicious balance between youth and full maturity; doesn't cloy. Rating: 93
