Yealands Way Pinot Gris 2010 |
| |
|
|
The 2010 Yealands Way Pinot Gris is brimming with pear drop and nutty characters, leading to flavours of stone fruit and honey .The palate is full and shows wonderful balance between fruit sweetness and acidity, with a refreshing, crisp finish. Enjoy with Asian food, chicken dishes and many light southern Italian pasta dishes.
The Seaview Vineyard is exposed to some of the toughest growing conditions in Marlborough; high sunshine and wind, cool nights and low rainfall which produces a smaller, thicker skinned berry with intense fruit flavours. The rolling contours of the vineyard result in significant variation (smaller, more intensely flavoured fruit on the ridges, balanced by lush growth in the gullies). Pinot Gris flourishes at Seaview, with pure fruit flavours prevailing along with a crisp minerality that is evident through all our wines. The vines planted are of the Berrysmith clone which produces smaller berries and bunches, giving more intense flavours. 2010 was an exceptional year with a long, dry Indian summer prevailing which ensured we were able to harvest our Pinot Gris at optimum ripeness and in pristine condition.
Five parcels of Pinot Gris were harvested individually over a period of seven days by both machine and hand. The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and pressed gently, separating the free fun juice from the pressings. The juice was cold settled for 48 hours then racked prior to a long cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks to capture and enhance the fruit flavours of pear, honey and stone fruit. Each parcel was fermented separately using a range of selected yeasts. Following fermentation the wine was blended, fined lightly and filtered prior to bottling.
At the heart of Yealands Estate is the determined spirit and unconventional thinking of founder and principal Peter Yealands. Happiest with his sleeves rolled up, out working the land, Peter turned the steeply sloped hills (many said were just too rugged for viticulture) into some of the first terraced vineyard in the country. That same ‘can do’ attitude drove the construction of a world class winery linking excellence in environmental design with state of the art technology and underpins our ambition to become a world leader in sustainable wine production.
