Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling 2011

The 2011 Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling shows lifted citrus aromas with distinct notes of slate and spice. The palate displays the classic Watervale characters of lemon and lime with a fine mineral structure. Although showing wonderful depth of flavour the Riesling wines from Knappstein in 2011 show
a distinct delicacy and liveliness on the palate. The natural acid level provides the wine's backbone and palate line and is perfectly balanced even in the wine's youth. Knappstein's commitment to hand picking ensures we produce a delicate wine displaying excellent purity of flavours and textures.
The wine was made with minimal intervention to preserve fruit purity. The fruit was hand picked and gently crushed with only the best free-run juice used. It was then cold settled and cool fermented with neutral yeast to dryness. The wine was cold settled prior to filtration and bottling.
The 2011 vintage for the Clare Valley will most notably be remembered as a wet one. Significant rain levels were recorded throughout the region in the months of March & April. Prior to these wet conditions the weather was considerably more favourable with the damp Winter guaranteeing generous soil moisture profiles. The relatively mild Summer saw Riesling vines in the Clare Valley develop strong canopies and ensured a slow and steady accumulation of sugar, allowing flavours to develop nicely, whilst acids remained high. A hectic week of harvesting prior to a major rain event in March meant that Knappstein had its Riesling harvest all but complete prior to the 'Big Wet'. This led to juice with great varietal characters, high natural acidities and a wonderful delicacy due to the moderate sugar levels.
The fruit is sourced from a selection of vineyards situated mainly around the Watervale sub-region of the Clare Valley, including our Ackland Vineyard. Vine ages range from approximately 10 - 30 years old.
