There is a water-like purity to this (in the clean and refreshing sense) despite a tough growing season, proving that adversity can be a gift. Pale, almost clear with a vivid green hue the nose is fresh and restrained leaning toward citrusy and subtle floral notes. The palate is minimally elegant, offering an insight into the potential for this wine with a core of delicate citrus flavours and a crystal clear mineral acidity.

PAST ACCOLADES:

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: 94 (2014)
Single vineyard, hand-picked; chilled overnight, then whole bunch-pressed. Good riesling from start to finish, its varietal expression unimpeachable, its length and balance likewise. Its best years are in front of it.

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: 96 (2013)
Bright straw-green; from two vineyards at well over 500m altitude, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, and only lightly pressed (500l per tonne, not 650-700l). A brilliantly precise portrayal of Eden Valley riesling, the flavours firmly held in a lemon, rather than lime, spectrum, with bright acidity interwoven through the fruit. 250 dozen made.

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion: 95 (2012)
Hand-picked and whole bunch-pressed, with only 500 litres per tonne (normally up to 700 litres) extracted, and a mere 250 dozen made. Despite the gentle approach, is full of lime/lemon/lemongrass fruit that will develop a third dimension of lemon curd with five years in bottle. A truly lovely wine.

VINTAGE NOTES:
Another cracking Eden Valley Riesling vintage. Due to previous conditions 2015 was always set up to be a low yielding vintage but spring frosts certainly didn’t help. After good winter rains, the summer was relatively dry and close water management was required. What really set up the vintage was a cool January with rain at just the right time to freshen up the vines. The resulting fruit is outstanding with delicate flavours and truly lovely natural acidity.

The fruit was hand harvested early in the morning into small bins before rapid transportation to the winery. Following a chill overnight at seven degrees overnight the fruit was whole bunch pressed. The fermentation was very cool, at around twelve degrees, and allowed to ferment to bone dry. The absence of the influence of solids is crucial to the purity of the style.
