This wine is made from grapes grown on the home and the Wall vineyards, both in the Waihopai Valley. They are both located on alluvial river soils, quite close to the Waihopai river. This proximity to the river allows some degree of protection from debilitating frosts. Both vineyards are grown on a 2 cane pruned and trained on a VSP system. Yield restriction techniques from shoot and cluster thinning, leaf plucking by hand to accurately manage sunlight interception and hand harvest are employed using the same team thereby building the required sensitivity demanded by this challenging variety.
This Gewurztraminer is a deliberately restrained style as it is their belief that classic wines, destined for the table should compliment rather than challenge the cuisine with which it is enjoyed. The colour is a lovely pale straw with the barest hints of yellow from the skin contact. The nose is beautifully perfumed showing rose petal, lychee and muscat characters. There is also an intriguing muskiness we attribute to the wild yeast and lees contact. The palate is thankfully free of the oiliness often seen in supercharged Gewurztraminer. We prefer to see purity of fruit, poise and balance as the key elements of our Gewurztraminer.
Cellaring potential 3 to 5 years. Ideal with classic European inspired cuisine, try it with roast chicken or pasta dishes, or with Asian dishes but go easy on the chilli.
