Geoff Hardy GMH Petit Verdot 2009 |

This wine exhibits the generosity of flavour gained from leaving the grapes to ripen fully on the vine. Vibrant blackcurrant, peppermint and spiciness on the palate. Limited oak maturation allows the varietal characters of this McLaren Vale Petit Verdot to take the spotlight.
Those who know these kinds of things reckon Petit Verdot was growing in Bordeaux before Cabernet Sauvignon found its way there. It was (and to a degree still is) used in many classic blends from the region, however of late has fallen out of favour as the grapes take longer to ripen than many of the classic, dominant grapes (Merlot, Cabernet et al).
New World producers in Australia (four times as much is grown here as in France) and California suffer this handicap less, however, and have taken to pressing the grape into a single variety wine. And whilst it is still a common blending grape for Cabernet here, where it serves to stiffen the mid palate, many of the stand alone examples produced are hailed for their strong violet and leather tones, tempered by a distinctive hint of banana.
