"This is a Frankland and Margaret River blend. It’s soft and grainy with some beautiful scents of sted plum, cedar and lavender. The palate is deliciously rich but held by those fine tannins 90 points." Ray Jordan’s WA Wine Guide 2009.
The 2005 growing season began with a cold wet winter, setting the vines up for good, even budburst. Spring weather was mild, dry and windy, contributing to keeping berry size small. Conditions at flowering were optimal - generally warm days with cool nights, allowing for good fruit set. Frankland River experienced an extremely dry, early season which produced Shiraz of great power and intensity.
A significant portion of the fruit was crushed with open rollers to introduce whole berries into the fermentation, which was carried out in tank. A third of the blend was pressed early and finished fermentation in predominantly new French oak barriques while the Margaret River component was co-fermented with (pressed) Viognier skins contributing aromatics and structure. The wine completed malolactic fermentation in a combination of tank and barrel with 14 months maturation in predominantly French oak (55% new barriques).
Colour Deep red with garnet hues.
Bouquet Dark, ripe fruits of the forest combined with fragrant blossom and lifted spicy notes framed by fine oak characters.
Palate A full-bodied, powerful wine, packed full of fleshy ripe fruit, juicy blackberries and mixed spice. The plush fruit and dense tannins combine to produce a wine of great structure and generosity.
