Gets better with each vintage, this '08 lifting the bar to gold medal status at the Sydney Wine Show '10. Very well made, the spicy red and black cherry fruit of the shiraz working synergistically with the tannins of the dark berry Mourvedre, which are fine rather than robust. From: Nagambie Lakes, Vic Drink: Now-2016 With: Double-cooked pork hock
This wine opens up with some very strong colour, a dense inky-purple with a perfumed nose displaying summer cassis , blackberry & redcurrant. 95 % Shiraz provides deep spicy Blackberry and concentrated rich berry flavours are the hallmark though overall. The palate is all upfront to begin and at once powerful, yet elegant with well-integrated fruit, some spicy French oak and fine-grained tannin to finish.
Rich, with elegant and supple tannins, this Rhone inspired blend is an enigmatic blend of cool-climate spicy Shiraz, combined with mild climate full bodied Shiraz and finally tempered by the savoury tannins of Mourvedre. This delicious, exciting and harmonious wine exhibits aromas and flavours of blackberry, pepper and spice combined with the elegant integration of French Oak. The 2008 Shiraz Mourvedre is a wine that will excite anyone who drinks it. The balance and combination of rich dark fruits, subtly integrated oak and complexity that keeps you going back for more. With excellent length of flavour, this wine is magnificent now however will undoubtedly reward those who offer it time. The growing season in 2008 started very well with a cool spring and good rains vital during the growing season. Harvesting began a little earlier than usual, nevertheless small berry sizes and lighter bunch weights complimented by high sugar levels produced ripe, rich and intense flavours in the berries. The 2008 growing season was a memorable one in which intensity and fruit quality were so superior, unlike anything seen for a long time. The 2008 Basilisk Shiraz Mourvedre is a testament to the growing season, where wines with amazing colour depth and intensity were produced.
Fruit for the Basilisk Shiraz Mourvedre was harvested from select vineyard sites within Central Victoria during March/April 2008. The must was fermented in static red fermenters and pumped over every eight hours for the ferment’s duration. Once the ferment was dry, the resulting wine was pressed off the skins and allowed to settle before allowing a natural secondary fermentation to commence. Separate parcels of the wine spent between 6 and 12 months on French oak, after which the final blending of select parcels took place. The resulting wine is ripe, complex and wonderfully rich and brooding. This is in part due to the distinct Shiraz parcels, but also as a result of the Mourvedre which imparts a fruit driven yet earthy character to the wine.
